Environmental dishwashing/laundry powders
In terms of the brand of dishwashing or laundry powder or liquid we recommend, well, our answer needs a bit more detail. The fact is standard dishwashing and laundry powders contain a lot of harmful ingredients that have a negative impact on the environment.
First, the nasties, Standard dishwashing and laundry powder contain some serious ingredients like oxygen based bleaching agents, phosphates, non ionic surfactants and polycarboxylates. Phosphates are water softening agents that enhance the performance of surfactants, the ingredient that does the cleaning. Problem is, Phosphates are corrosive, and can cause skin irritation and do damage to fine crockery over time. Phosphates are fertilizers so when they enter the waterways they fertilize the plant life, making plants and algae grow in over abundance and eventually depleting the water's oxygen and fish and organisms die.
Second, while chlorine and bleaches are not often used these days, their sister, oxygen based bleaching agents are. When they enter our waterways, they may combine with other compounds and become organochlorines such as dioxin, which is a known carcinogen.
But here is the good news. We always recommend the excellent environmentally friendly alternatives that don't contain these harmful ingredients. And you can buy a varied range from your local supermarket or health and environment stores and they won't cost you more per cycle.
